The Red Queen hypothesis

Since I published the first entry of my blog has been nothing less than a year and seven months, and during its existence have been posted a total of 70 entries (71 if we this). As my friend Gorza, I had moments of inspiration and moments in which I have written truño which may well have splashed earthenware Mr. Rock, but hey, everyone knows I'm not H. Christian Andersen, because if it were live in Odense and now would not be a heat pyx but helándome in Denmark. Although it is true that would be dead and cold balls shroud me awhile.

The thing is, that during all this time I put the name with the blog and many people believe that it makes no sense, it is but a particular joke that only I know them, or some other theory crazy, but the reality is quite different. Perhaps a biologist or someone versed in a science type and with a taste for reading happens occasionally on my blog, and knows what it's roll, but for those outside this whole scene I decided to explain where it comes from such a unique name.

If you are observers of you will have noticed that my blog address is http://paradojadelareinaroja.blogspot.com, that the name of my blog is actually "The Red Queen's Race" and the title This entry "Red Queen Hypothesis." I think the proper name of the hypothesis is "The Red Queen's Race", but hey, we're not picky either.

The Red Queen Race referred to (at least in biology, specifically in the category of evolution) to the hypothesis that species are in a constant state of change and evolution just to stay where they are (metaphorically speaking), ie that species are constantly moving to avoid running into the lurch. Clear examples of this include cases of coevolution: The host over time (geologic time scale, of course) evolves and undergoes changes, some of which allow you to defend, or worse host for the parasite, which is a clear advantage over individuals suffering from the infection worse. If the parasite is not in continuous evolution and mutations do not appear to outweigh this effect, the end would end up dying because he could not parasitize the host and depends on him to live.

Evolve or die, that is the question. Adapting to the changing environment and be able to live with them. The name comes from the passage from "Alice Through the Looking Glass" when the above has been in the country of the Red Queen and starts to run with everyone, until you realize that everything around you remains the same:

" Alicia looked around him with great surprise.

" But how? If we seem to have been under this tree all the time! All is the same as before!

- Why, yes! "Agreed the Queen. And how else?

"Well, what is in my country," said Alice, still panting a lot, when you run as fast as we have been doing and for some time, you usually get somewhere else ...

- a fairly slow! "Replied the Queen. What is here, you see, everything needed to run a can to stay in one place. If you want to get somewhere else you have to run at least twice as fast. "

And that's it for today. I hope you liked the parable, but in this case could not be called because the original story implies no theory, but in this case the lesson comes later. Greetings!
